About Australian Shepherds
Despite the name, the Australian Shepherd was actually developed in the western United States in the 1800s and 1900s, working alongside Basque shepherds who had immigrated by way of Australia, which is likely where the misleading name came from. Bred to herd livestock over rugged range, the Aussie is relentlessly smart, high energy, and happiest with a job to do, a trait that shows up just as often chasing a frisbee or herding the kids around a backyard as working actual sheep.
